Where are you right now...
I just got back from Scotland and I’m in Holland right now, we just came beck to sell the beasty van that we bought here.
Who have you been travelling with...
I have been travelling with my GF Shanine , we have been "getting to know each other" crammed in our van for 7 weeks!
Where now for big Kelly...
I’m leaving for Norway tomorrow to hit the Days Of Thunder comp ,which is a competition put on by Trond Hansen and friends at Hafjell bike park in Norway The comp has LARGER than normal jumps and most of the emphasis is put on getting kick ass videos and photos and having fun as opposed to other competitions that can be very serious at times! ,yeah and as soon as I get back from Norway its straight on the plane to Canada/USA for Highlands New Hampshire and of course Crankworx Colorado and Whistler .. so it should be sweeeet. Then I will hang out and do some riding till the end of the season.
How has the European events been...
The European events have been awesome, This trip has been a blast, I kind of had a rough schedule of some comps I wanted to go to and when we started on the circuit we heard of a few more and hit them up too. I’m pretty stoked I have made the final in every comp I entered and placed top 10 in all except FISE mont pellier where I got 12th. I also won a bit of cash at quite a few of the events to help run the van! You meet a lot of cool people at the comps and then see them again at the next event so that’s cool too.
How’s the recession hurting the freeride events...
Yes well the recession taking a toll on some of the freeride events ,the Nissan sponsored Qashqai events for example is one event that got the boot in the tough financial times. I guess sponsorship is one of the first things that gets the knock when company’s have to tighten their belt financially. The good thing is that the sport of freeride/dirtjump/slopestyle is growing so fast that there are a lot of new competitions popping up ,which is great …hopefully we can get some more comps happening in NZ!
How is the body holding up...
Haha ..the body.. well the body (touch wood…touch a big ass RIMU tree!) is really good, but we all know that with Mountain biking your health status can change at any time!! Ending up in the meatwagon (ambulance) is all part of the sport but you just have to play it as smart as you can to try and avoid it.
You seem to be getting lots of international press these days, how does that feel...
Yeah its cool , its building my profile as rider so I’m stoked
Did you get a watch any DH races while in Europe...
Yeah got to watch a race in Germany where Justin Leov and Keiran Bennet were racing …it was cool to sit back and watch …those boys are on it!, The riders are so focused at that level ,it gets crazy in the fast sections! I saw a crash there that belittled most of my get offs! I would have been keen to check out some more but a lot of the races clashed with the events I was competing in.
What plans do you have for the NZ summer...
I think it is ON for another awesome NZ summer, when it is cold in the northern hem you only have a few options if you want to ride your bike and NZ is pretty good one I reckon! I would like to hang in Nelson for a bit longer this time and will no doubt have to head to Queenstown to get a gorge road/FrewFarm Fix.
We hear you are getting one of the new DH DHR’s next month...
Mate I am pumped on that! I saw one in the flesh at the Interbike show in Vegas and have been having dreams ever since.. they look sick and from what I’ve heard they ride even better! I have a stash of awesome parts to put on it in the states so I cant wait to get her up the mountain for its maiden voyage in whistler.
After watching your Team Profile video we are thinking you should be racing DH also...
Haha ..if I throw my leg over a DHR I will probably have no choice.. yeah I wouldn’t mind having a crack at a few races in NZ . I love racing and if I have the time and cash I will be out there.. so stand back from the tape cause I might be getting looooose...
