| Marzocchi rider Matt Simmonds on his way to 14th place |
The world cup season got under way overnight in Maribor, Slovenia with all the top riders (bar an injured Fabien Barel) looking to start their season on the right foot. Wet weather all week made the fast course even more difficult with big holes opening up and the infamous rock garden had to be taken with even more care than in previous years.
Monster-Specialized Team mates Sam hill and Brendan Fairclough looked to be the favourites and seeded fastest on a course which suited them both really well but mistakes in the final saw Brendan drop to 3rd and Hill finish up 5th. In the end the race was run by Mr. consistent Greg Minnaar which proves he won't be fazed by the technical tracks that have been laid out for everyone during this years World Cup circuit.
In the New Zealanders, Cameron Cole continued his top form by slotting in to the top 10 with 9th place and tied with fellow Kiwi Justin Leov. Former Wide Open team rider Sam Blenkinsop showed he hasn't let an early season injury slow him down by finishing 12th.
2010 Team Wide Open riders Matt Scoles and Brook McDonald had solid results for their new overseas teams by finishing 36th and 38th place respectively, easily making it in to the top half of a quality field in a tight race where one mistake could cost you 20 places. World Champion Steve Peat stalled in the rock Garden and had to settle with 45th place after the final so its awesome to see the boys hold it together in such a hard race!
The world cup series moves to Scotland in 3 weeks at the legendary Fort William so look out for more news then, but in the mean time check out Dirt's video of the event below-
