It has become apparent that for the health of the planet and everything on it including you and me, the focus needs to shift from recycling plastic to eliminating it altogether. The good news is that there are already many products in the market to replace a lot of the plastics currently in use.

Wide Open has committed to decreasing our environmental impact and one of the most obvious issues when you work in distribution is the amount of plastic courier bags you generate. To address that issue the first step we have taken is switching to these compostable courier bags from The Better Packaging Co.

These bags are made from corn starch, are designed to be re-usable and when they are beyond using again, just put them in your compost and they will break down into worm food!

Here's the official word on the break down process;

How long will they take to degrade?
Well, that will depend on the conditions they’re in. In a ‘standard’ home compost, they have been certified (AS5810-2010) to biodegrade within 180 days, i.e.. approx 6 months. Under commercial composting conditions, it would happen much faster, and as litter (e.g. under a tree) it would happen slower, but it will happen. The Australian Standard is one of the most rigorous in the world and includes a worm toxicity test which means that our comPOST Packs are safe to be eaten by the little, pink wriggly guys.

We'll also be setting up an office compost to deal with our food waste and any compostable bags we receive.

For the full run down on the bags, or if you want to start using them too, check them out here.

Next, we are looking at alternatives to bubble wrap such as this Geami wrap from r3pack;

The Geami WrapPak is the combination of a patented die cut Kraft paper with a tissue interleaf paper. When dispensed it expands to a 3D honeycomb structure, providing the most innovative, and visually stunning packaging solution of up to 134 metres.

There is no need to cut the wrap, simply tear and it will lock onto itself (yes reducing plastic tape too!)

Geami WrapPak is;

- Naturally biodegradable and compostable
- Recyclable
- Made from sustainable forests
- The dispenser is also made from cardboard and recyclable

We are starting with easy changes that significantly decrease our waste output and we have many more ideas to work on moving forward. By making changes now we hope that our grand-children can enjoy the clean green plastic free environment we grew up with instead of dealing with the mess our generation have created for them.
