NZ's PREMIER CYCLING COMPONENT SUPPLIER

Get to know Wide Open Athlete: Kayley Mcmillan

At just 16, Kayley McMillan is already turning heads. She’s been racing since she was 12, juggling school life, team sports, and a seriously competitive XC schedule. We sat down for a quick Q&A - fresh off her custom build from the Wide Open Workshop.

Q&A

Q: Where did you grow up, and how did you get into riding?

Kayley:

I am from Morrinsville in the Waikato and have grown up in the little town my whole life. I have been brought up riding a bike like second nature to me. I have been riding ever since I was able to walk and even earlier in little trailers behind mum and dad with my siblings. So younger me didn’t really get a choice whether to like it or not.

Q: What first drew you to mountain biking?

Kayley:

Being able to watch my brother race XC and the other big kids drew me even closer to mountain biking and the love for racing when I was around 10 years old. As then I was too young to compete in many races it stayed a hobby till I was 12-13 when winning race became for frequent which lead to it becoming much more than a hobby.

Q: What’s a typical training week look like for you?

Kayley:

A typical training week for me has a mix of all my sports whether it is for the school or a representative team there is always a training or game on each day. With cycling I ride around 5-7 times a week depending on what is coming up. I always try my best to get outside riding in the forest but that isn’t always the case so I train a bit indoors. Te miro are my local tracks I ride at, but Rotorua is also a go to for long weekend rides. As well as riding I do strengthening off my bike a few times a week.

Q: Favourite place to ride?

Kayley:

My favourite places to ride is any where in the South Island and more specifically Queenstown. Coronet peaks rude rock is a fav to ride of course.

Q: What are you usually doing when you're not on the bike?

Kayley:

Things I do when I’m not on my bike would be training or playing netball, touch rugby, or basketball, doing school work that’s pretty much it!

Q: What are your goals for next season?

Kayley:

Next seasons goals would be pretty similar to this years, to do well at all my races especially nationals and Oceania’s, and to spend a little longer over seas getting more racing experience in my last year of u19. While of course still loving it! (And maybe a little practice at my wheelies!!)
